A Moment in Soccer - Selection #2
Getting the Message
I was driving home from a difficult State Cup Tournament loss. The same phone number was blowing up my phone, an angry parent I presumed. I wasn’t answering, and certainly not answering phone numbers I didn’t recognize. Eventually, the number left a message and stopped calling. I didn’t listen to it. Meanwhile, at my girlfriend and mine’s house, we received a call on our home phone. A home phone, what a quaint antiquity. Lisa’s mom, who was visiting, answered.
“Hello, Lisa and Rob’s.”
“Is Rob Harrington there?”
“No, he’s not. Can I take a message?”
“Who am I talking to?” the person on the line asked.
“Rob’s girlfriend’s mom.”
“Yes. Here’s my message. Tell him he’s a liar. Tell him no one can believe a word he says. Tell him he’s not a man of his word.”
Lisa’s mom held the phone away from her body, got Lisa’s attention and said, “I think this calls for you.”
